Girl Called Hope: Week 8 of SYNC

Download the new SYNC pair here!

“it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair”
Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

As the YA audiobook, Daughter of Smoke and Bone opens on a winter morning in Prague, we meet a blue-haired girl named Karou.  Listeners will discover that her name means “hope” in another city and in another language.  For Karou the winter will become one of despair as the secret of who she is is revealed at the same time as the war that has been kept secret from her.  War creates divides of people, spirit, and beliefs as Dickens so brilliantly shows us in this Classic performance of A Tale of Two Cities.  Yet in each war and in each of these audiobooks, a girl can stand for hope.

This week we’re treated to two gems that have in common: epic stories of good versus evil, lush description of character and place, love stories! In DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE, blue haired Karou was raised by witches and falls in love with beautifully angelic Akiva. Narrator Khristina Hvam enhances the gorgeous language. Best of all, it’s to be continued. A TALE OF TWO CITIES is considered by many to be Dickens’ masterpiece. The main characters give up much for war and love in its many guises. Golden Voice Simon Prebble adds his brilliance to the classic.

Thank you so much for making the audiobook of DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE available. I LOVE this book, and I think I enjoyed it even more because of the narrator. I actually did a video booktalk for the audiobook on our teen book club blog, here:

I can’t wait for next summer’s free audiobooks!

BLOODY JACK: Being an Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary “Jacky” Faber, Ship’s Boy by L.A. Meyer, WHITE CAT by Holly Black (read by Jesse Eisenberg) and A MONSTER CALLS by Patrick Ness are some of my favorite YA titles on audiobook. I also really enjoyed WHERE SHE WENT by Gayle Forman. It’s a sequel that I think stands alone.

READY PLAYER ONE by Ernest Cline is expertly read by Will Wheaton, and even though it’s an adult book, it won the Alex Award.

    I hope that helps!
