AudioFile editors get to listen to new audiobooks all year long, and as we listen, we often note special recordings that would make excellent additions to SYNC. We also review the many reading lists, published by schools and public libraries, with their suggestions of titles teens would enjoy. By noticing shared themes between these two sources we discovered this week's likely pair.

Melissa de la Cruz’s historical fantasy THE RING AND THE CROWN  brings us to a land of magic and royalty populated by historical characters like Joan of Arc. In SEA HEARTS, which now appears on many reading lists, Margo Lanagan brings us literally enchanting characters like Misskaella Prout, who can summon women from the sea to care for the men in the village and raise their children.

As both audiobooks take us away to lands where princes, princesses, witches, and magicians run wild, and bring order to their communities, they make a promising pair for Week 4. The lands they depict may be far away and made of dreams, but the tales and their narrators-- Jennifer IkedaPaul English, and Eloise Oxer --are well-matched to wring every very real human emotion from these fantastical tales. Listen to the audiobooks and click on the author links in this post to watch each author talk about her title.
