Memorable characters

The AudiobookSYNC 2017 season includes a host of engaging--and some terrifying--characters. Teens likely have met some of these in popular culture versions and may be surprised to find their stories as conceived in original and alternative accounts.

Among these characters is the titular BEAST in Donna Jo Napoli's lush account of Beauty and the Beast. As performed by Robert Ramirez, for Recorded Books, the cursed Prince Orasmyn can break the hearts of listeners who think they know the tale from Disney's musical.

Oscar Wilde's THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, narrated by Greg Wise for Naxos AudioBooks, may surprise teens as well. While they may be regularly reminded by both adults and friends that appearances can be deceiving, this story literally embodies that truism. This is a good choice for a group listening activity, perhaps offering the teen audience art supplies to keep their hands busy with portraits of their own as they take in Wilde's brief and eloquent tale.

Thank you, Recorded Books and Naxos AudioBooks for your continued support of SYNC and teen audioliteracy!
