During Week 8 of AudiobookSYNC, our pair of free audiobooks features American cultural history that may be new to many listeners. Both come from insiders, rather than providing viewpoints from outside the cultures they portray.
One of the unique strengths of listening to books is the seamless communication of verbal culture. How words are pronounced correctly, and inflections and emphases that communicate cultural specificity, arrive intact allowing the listener to engage more deeply with what lies beyond the words.
This week, AudiobookSYNC’s pair of free titles include a character-driven novel published less than a year ago, and another, built on folklore, that has won more than half a dozen youth book awards. One realistic fiction and the other fantasy, both give us stories about girls who seem to be nearly overcome by their situations, only to discover the power of their own voices.
