This week’s pair of free audiobooks include a classic and a title that puts a real historical character into a work of fiction. In both cases, listening readers are plunged into the worlds of some nefarious characters.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe turned the 15th-16th century German legend of Faust into a stage play in the 18thcentury. In the full cast recording SYNC participants can download this week thanks to Naxos AudioBooks, Goethe’s Faust is translated to English by John R. Williams and includes some very funny lines—even on the way to the ultimate tragedy that follows making a pact with the Devil. The cast includes well known British theater artists Samuel West, Toby Jones, Anna Maxwell Martin, Stephen Critchlow, Derek Jacobi, and Daniel Mair.

Paired with this classic, listeners can also download to keep Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco and performed by Nicola Barber for Hachette Audio. In a genre blend of thriller and historical fiction, this story features a 19th century high society girl who becomes engaged in forensic science at the time that a serial killer is terrorizing London’s streets.

Both of Week 3’s SYNC titles provide food for thought…as well as a few shivers of anticipation. Be careful when you strike a partnership.
