This week’s pair of free audiobooks from SYNC includes a highly popular novel from acclaimed young adult author David Levithan, and an audio drama from Scottish playwright Rona Munro that will likely be new to all listeners here.

Munro’s play DONNY’S BRAIN, performed for L.A. Theatre Works by a British and Irish cast including Paul Fox, Jared Harris, Siobhán Hewlett, Moira Quirk, and Sophie Winkleman, gives us the opportunity to share another drama from the Relativity Series of science themed plays. (Last summer, SYNC included THE EXPLORERS CLUB from the same series.) This time around, we meet a brain-injured patient who awakens after a car crash believing that the present in which he lives is a reality that actually occurred three years earlier. This leads to confusion not only for him, but also for his hospital visitors, who include his former wife and his current girlfriend. Who are we when our brains change? Do we remain the same, or do new identities emerge?

BOY MEETS BOY, Levithan’s Stonewall Honor and Lambda Literary Award winning novel about first love in a contemporary America, is altered from reality only by representing our culture as extending full social acceptance to its LGBTQ members. The performance from Full Cast Audio features Nicholas Robideau and a full cast. Now more than a decade old, this story of the difficulties of young love—even in a place where gay identity, cross dressing, and football are all equally accepted and at home—has become a deservedly popular classic. It doesn’t matter if the listener is gay or straight—as long as you know a little bit about puppy love and have empathy for anyone in its throes, this audiobook charms.
