As we plan each new SYNC season, we work to include a variety of performance techniques as well as subject matter. As much as possible, we search out brand new and older titles both, because we want to give teen listeners opportunities to experience audiobooks conveying as wide a range of possibilities as are available. To meet all that criteria, both Dreamscape and Hachette annually step up to give access to audiobooks that offer many experiential paths listeners can take.

In 2019, Dreamscape is providing teen listeners with two free titles.  OLIVIA TWIST, a well-imagined reboot of Charles Dickens’ famous novel (familiar to many because it has also become a musical, several movies, comic books, and more) by Lorie Langdon, and narrated by Pearl Hewitt, was released less than 6 months ago. Also from Dreamscape, this coming summer’s SYNC participants will have access to the joint biography of the van Gogh brothers: VINCENT AND THEO. Author Deborah Heligman and narrator Phil Fox provide listeners with the interesting opportunity to hear about visual art, as well as the relationship between the famous painter and his sibling and correspondent.

From Hachette Audio, we’re able to offer an author-read autobiography, BECOMING KAREEM, which takes us through Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s youth. Hearing a famous person’s personal story, in both his own words and his own voice, provides an experience that both basketball fans and those who have discovered Abdul-Jabbar’s current career as a writer with interests beyond the court can enjoy. Also from Hachette, a full cast recording of the short stories that Emma Donoghue developed from old news clippings has something for every listener. ASTRAY’s recording features narrators SYNC participants may recognize from previous seasons: Khristine Hvam, James Langton, Robert Petkoff, Suzanne Toren, and Dion Graham.

Thank you, Hachette and Dreamscape for adding these multifaceted listening opportunities to our coming season. Listeners, we’re in for a huge range of ways to meet and enjoy audiobooks as a medium.
