Imaginative Listening

Written by Francisca Goldsmith on Thursday, February 21, 2019

We’re delighted to welcome Recorded Books and Tantor Media back to SYNC for the 2019 season! They are providing listeners with a total of four audiobooks that include three #OwnVoices titles, each tinged with traces of fantastic elements, and some nonfiction from a popular science author who tells fact as though it were hilarious science fiction.

From Recorded Books, we’ll be sharing THE EPIC CRUSH OF GENIE LO by F.C. Yee and performed by Nancy Wu. This narrator was among the recommendations last season’s listeners suggest we work to include this year and we know this download is sure to be popular with those who already are fans as well as those meeting her for the first time in Yee’s fantasy debut that plays on Chinese folklore.

Also from Recorded Books, A GIRL LIKE THAT, by Tanaz Bhathena, comes to listeners in a full cast performance featuring Firdous Bamji, Neil Shah, Soneela Nankani, and Lameece Issaq. Set in present day Saudi Arabia, this debut novel explores romance, cultural taboos, and the impressions others have of us that may not match our intentions.

For Tantor Media, Emily Woo Zeller narrates Mary Roach’s humorous yet scientifically informed exploration of the human digestive system as toured in GULP. Tantor Media is also providing the #OwnVoices series opener AKATA WITCH by Nnedi Okorafor and performed by Nigerian American actress Yetide Bedaki.

Welcome back, Recorded Books and Tantor! And welcome back, SYNC participants! It’s going to be a great summer of listening!
